Nepal: One Foot In Paradise – Hiking The Kathmandu Valley

The Kathmandu Valley consists of three major cities – Kathmandu, of course, the seat of the Nepali government; Patan or Lalitpur, the city of artists; and Bhaktapur, the City of Devotees. In addition, there is Kirtipur, home to Tribhuvan University and a variety of other small towns, sacred sites and shrines, all of which are ringed by forested hills backed up by the Himalayas. This special itinerary takes you from the lower part of the valley, up into the hills to the 8891’ summit of Shivapuri, where you will find a wonderful “Baba” or teacher. As you hike, you have a chance to meet the people, get a sense of the everyday life of the hill people and enjoy lovely views of the mountains.

Heading back down into the city of Kathmandu, you explore this administrative center of Nepal and visit the other key cities of Bhaktapur and Patan before heading back away from the snow-capped Himalayas to your homes.

This year, due to the earlier earthquake, we will camp in several sites, rather than stay in lodges. We will, however, cook in the lodges, so that the local people will benefit from the income. For more on Nepal, watch Toni Neubauer on A Conversation with Brent Boynton.
