Namaste!
Let me personally invite you to join me and my Nepali friends on a remarkable trip to a country that is my second home. This coming fall, on likely my last group leadership trip to Nepal, I will take an intimate number of people to visit this Himalayan treasure and get to know the country and people in a way few travelers can do.
WHY IS THIS TRIP REMARKABLE?
As many of you know, I have been traveling Nepal for more than 35 years and have seen more of the country than most westerners today. Furthermore, the non-profit I founded, READ Global, has gone on to build 67 rural library community centers from one end of Nepal to another, seed 128 businesses, serve about 1.9 M people and win the $1M Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Access to Learning Award. Thus, this trip will introduce you to some of my closest friends and share the workings of READ Nepal, a true model philanthropy program that has survived and thrived for nearly 30 years.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Traveling alongside me, you will spend quality time with Nepalis from widely disparate walks of life, different religions and cultures and with distinct political beliefs. Calling all travelers – this special Himalayan adventure is for everyone – hikers and non-hikers, young and old, and male and female! Your path will traverse a variety of ecosystems, from high snow-capped mountains down to the jungle about 100 ft. above sea level. You will witness ceremonies seen by few visitors, dedicate a library in a small village far from any tourist route, bathe elephants and birdwatch on the Rapti River and sit down to share conversation with farmers, professors, businesspeople, artists and many other new friends.
WHAT IS THE ROUTE?
The journey begins in the Kathmandu Valley with sunrise at Swayambunath, the heart and soul of the Valley and visits to other key sites and the READ office. Then, after an optional Everest View flight, you journey to Gorkha, home of the King who founded the Shah dynasty in Nepal. Here you will dedicate a new READ Center and explore villages in the shadow of Langtang, Baudha Himal and other sky-touching peaks. From Gorkha, you head to Pokhara, where you’ll be face to face with the Annapurnas, and finally drop down to the jungle and spend time with the local Tharus, experience Chitwan Animal Park and visit one of the most successful of the READ Centers in Nepal. The trip ends with a very special farewell dinner in Kathmandu with new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
