Colorful India Travel

Colorful India

This journey to India’s Northeast is one of the most colorful parts of an already colorful country. Your journey takes you to the home of the Meitei, Nagas, Khasi and other tribal cultures, visiting their villages and learning about their culture. Starting in Calcutta, you head to Imphal, the capital of Manipur and known to westerners for its critical role in World War II. Here you meet some of the Meitei and Naga people living in the area. From Imphal, you travel to Kohima, home to the Nagas and to Khonoma, an Angami Naga village. Crossing the Brahmaputra, there is time to explore charming Majuli Island and appreciate the different craftspeople there. Nearby is Kaziranga, home to the largest number of one-horned rhinos on the subcontinent. The journey ends with time in Shillong, capital of the state of Meghalaya, where you experience the matrilineal Khasi culture.

In the spring, you enjoy the Sekrenyi Festival about 2 hours from Kohima; and, in the fall, the Raas Lila Festival on Majuli Island.

Note that this is a rather remote area of India and travelers need to be flexible in terms of hotels. If you want to upgrade the rooms where available, do let us know.
