Few islands in the world offer the diversity that exists in Sri Lanka, and one area that shines is that of wildlife. This two-week program seeks out leopards, loris, whales and other animals that live on this uniquely varied island. Along the way, you have private tours in Wilpattu, the first of Sri Lanka’s parks, Tea Country, Sinharaja, the Horton Plains and other sites, and meet some of the country’s wildlife experts. You travel by train, catamaran, boat, jeep, tractor – modes of transport as varied as the animals you are hoping to see.

Trip Overview
Experience & Explore

Day 1

Arrive Sri Lanka. Met and escorted through immigration and customs. Drive to Makandura to the Notary’s House. Bullcok cart ride to coconut estate. Enjoy a coconut infused welcome dinner at Notary’s House at 8 PM.

Day 2

Drive to Leopard Trails near Wilpattu National Park. Afternoon 4 x 4 Jeep game drive to explore park with naturalists.

Day 3

Full day Wilpattu National Park. Today is a Poya Day. All pubs, bars and wine stores will be closed.

Day 4

Morning game drive and drive to Vil Uyana. Evening small trek on hotel grounds to spot Loris in the wild around 7 PM.

Day 5

Early morning drive to Polonnaruwa. Boat ride from the shores of the Parakrama Samudraya to Bird Island to see immigrant and endemic birds. Meeting with Wolfgang Dittus Ph.D. who runs the Primate Center in Polonnaruwa. Drive to Minneriya for 4 x 4 Jeep game drive.

Day 6

Bird watching tour with naturalist. Drive to Kandalama and see elephants at Kep Ela.

Day 7

Train to Nuwara Eliya, getting off at Nanu Oya and drive to your hotel. Explore Nuwara Eliya in the evening.

Day 8

Full day game drive into Horton Plains with guide and a tracker of the Wildlife Department. Evening at leisure.

Day 9

Drive to Uda Walawe, famous for elephants and endemic birds. Evening game drive into the Uda Walawe National Park.

Day 10

After breakfast visit the Elephant Transit Home at Uda Walawe and spend time with baby elephants. Evening game drive into the Uda Walawe National Park.

Day 11

Drive to Mirissa. After lunch explore an old Dutch Fortress, The Matara Fort.

Day 12

Early morning private whale watching excursion. Time at leisure before visit to local villages in the area by bike.

Day 13

Morning at leisure before drive to Bentota. Evening drive to Kosgoda for private baby sea turtle releasing session followed by cocktails. Special farewell island dinner in Balapitiya.

Day 14

Transfer to airport for flight out.
